Staghorn Fern

Staghorn Ferns thrive when mounted with New Zealand sphagnum moss. Because they are epiphytic, they naturally grow on other surfaces rather than in soil. Spagmoss provides the perfect airy, moisture-retentive base to secure them to plaques or boards, giving your Staghorn Fern the ideal environment to establish a strong, healthy root system.

Description
Mounting a Staghorn Fern

Staghorn Ferns (Platycerium) are unique and striking epiphytic plants that absorb water and nutrients through their fronds. To successfully mount and grow a Staghorn Fern, you need a substrate that holds moisture well without suffocating the roots.

Spagmoss New Zealand sphagnum moss is the industry standard for this application. By creating a nest of Spagmoss against a wooden board or tree fern panel, you create a moisture reservoir that the fern can root into. The moss's long strands make it incredibly easy to bind the plant securely using fishing line or twine, ensuring the fern stays anchored while it establishes its basal fronds.
